In 2017 the Capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the city of Astana, will be hosting the Anniversary X International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians. The Competition will be held within the cultural program of the World Expo-2017. Over the past 25 years the Competition was held nine times – in Russia, as well as Europe and Asia, becoming a major international event in cultural life. Each Competition will forever remain in the hearts of participants, spectators and organizers. Undoubtedly, Astana will be most hospitable to it’s guests!
Promoter and host of the X International Tchaikovsky Competition in Astana is the Kazakh National University of Arts – one of the leading higher educational institutes of Central Asia. Continues gradual musical education from the first steps in the musical world till professional mastering in the University is the basis of learning approach of KNUA. The idea belongs to the founder and rector of the KNUA, National Artist of the Republic of Kazakhstan and laureate of the VIII International Tchaikovsky Competition (1986) Aiman Mussakhadjaeva.
KNUA is situated in the modern urban complex right in the centre of Astana. The University offers 4 major faculties: Musical, Traditional Arts, Theatre, Cinema and TV and the Arts faculty.
KNUA also attaches great importance to international cultural communications. Eurasian Symphony Orchestra and art ensembles of Kazakh National University of Arts regularly tour Central and Eastern Europe, Great Britain, Korea and Russia.
The idea to hold the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Astana arose 10 years ago. This year the competition will be held within the cultural program of the World EXPO-2017. Young musicians-participants of the competition will become the embodiment of the exhibition’s theme: «Future energy».
The International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians is the largest independent professional contest among young talents (up to 17 years old). The Competition consists of 3 sections: piano, violin and cello.
The original formula of the Competition is that it is held in different countries, which gives young musicians from all around the world a unique opportunity to participate in this prestigious contest. Its natural ties with the International Tchaikovsky Competition (winners of the Youth Competition participate in the adult one), great number, technical and artistic level of all contestants, most difficult competition repertoire, authoritative jury boards, great interest among public and wide media coverage – all these facts allow to call the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians the most prestigious international youth contest in the world.
The main objective of the competition is educational. With the help from pedagogues, young musicians prepare complicated repertoire, which lays the foundation for future professional mastery. The Competition provides talented young artists the opportunity to demonstrate their skills to wide audience – about 1200 contestants from 35 countries took part in the last 7 contests, 2800 musicians participated in preliminary auditions, more than 70000 spectators got acquainted with interpretations executed by the participants, heard opinions of authoritative musicians and critics. Moreover, educational nature of the Competition is reaffirmed by establishing special awards for best teachers, inclusion of lectures, master-classes and exhibitions into the competition program.
